Tea Project on the Move

First stop: Novomoskovsk Youth Library
Mission: Drink tea with everyone and save the bags...

For those of you unfamiliar with my work, I build sculptures with used tea bags. My new project will be "Tea in Ukraine" (although this title may change). I intend to drink tea with everyone who has had an impact on my life here in Ukraine, save the bags, and create something wonderful. Next stop: favorite computer and copy shop to drink tea with the boys.

Community Tea Consumption

Tea Anyone?
With a focus on the road ahead, I've returned to full "artist-mode" with a vengence. I have begun a new community-based project which will involve all my Ukrainian friends and community connections. My friends Manette and Lisa sent me some giant tea filter-bags from home, which are now making the rounds of my English clubs for some spur of the moment mini-tea parties. (Thank you Manette and Lisa!)

Christmas Lunch "Danish" Style.

Ukrainian people celebrated Christmas on January 6 this year. A member of our Open Borders English club decided to invite everyone to his apartment for a Ukrainian Christmas lunch...Danish style. Thomas is an ex-pat from Denmark and he went home for the holidays and returned with all sorts of lovely traditional Danish foods (no, NOT Danish as we know it). Thomas spent most of the evening in the kitchen preparing everything while the rest of us ate like a hungry pack of wolves. I can't tell you all the foods he brought out but I am excited to tell you that I ate cavier for the first time. I must say that it's not the taste that grabbed me, but the texture. After you put these tiny black eggs into your mouth they dissolve on your tongue. That's the only way I can describe this sensation. Sort of like, expensive pop rocks without the fizzle. It was indeed a very nice sensation. I thought that I would hate cavier knowing how very salty it is, but I didn't care about that...it is all about the way it feels on your tongue.

There was so much food there I thought Thomas was expecting an army! Course after course was sent out...the first 2 courses were fish, the next one was meat and then the cheeses came out with the cool crisp green bell peppers...I died and went to heaven! I haven't had yummy chess or green bell pepper since March 2011! Afterwards the dessert came out and we all ate homemade marzipan. It was a nice evening and everyone had a good time. Next time we are planning an international feast...I promised to cook American and Italian...perhaps I will prepare hot wings and a ziti bake?

Homeless Animals in Ukraine

There are thousands of homeless dogs and cats here in Ukraine and it just breaks my heart to see what miserable lives they lead...especially now with the weather being so cold and snowy. Back in September I rallied the folks in my English clubs to donate a few kopecs every week so we could donate some much needed funds to a friend of mine who uses her own money to sterilize stray cats. Over the course of the next 4 months we collected 700 UAH and I presented it to my friend Natasha, who promptly tried to give it back! I had the girls in my club explain that this was impossible..that many many people donated every week to aid her cause. I think it was the first time I ever saw her speechless!  It was a worthy cause and I hope that the people who helped out will remember to sterilize their pets and to spread the word about the importance of caring for our homeless animals.
