Exhibition

Daniela and I
The "West meets East" exhibition reception went off without a hitch.  The place was packed with artists, poets, educators, family, and friends.  Unfortunatley, due to my recent health problems, I was not up to par. I did not participate in hanging the show or any of the usual work that accompanies a new exhibition.  You would think after all this time I would be loving not having to do any of the hard work, but I feel a bit cheated.  I worked very hard for the past 18 months to see this book exchange through to the end, and I missed a huge chunk of it.  I barely remember the evening. I was tired and just wrung out after the hospital.  I am very greatful to have been able to be present...at one point I didn't think I would be getting out of the hospital any time soon...but still, I can't help feeling that I missed something.

I went back today to take a few pictures of the gallery and see the work.  Daniela had invited other students and books artists to participate because it is such a big gallery. The work was very good and I was pleased. It's one of those types of shows you have to keep going back to.  Everytime you look at a book, you find something different, even if you have already seen it. The textures and colors were rich and vibrant in every way.  The best part of this show?  You could TOUCH everything!!! A rarity in the art world. The collection of books from Daniela's students were my favorite. I commented to Daniela that I wish I didn't know how to make books...in this way I could be more inventive and experimental.  There is something truly special about the raw and inexperienced construction of the student books.  Beautiful!

The reception was a whirlwind for me.  I was whisked from one person to another, talking, mingling, and then having to get up an make a statement!  I found myself wishing I were in bed...it was that hard. Daniela had a performance artist there in my honor, and her students also did a bit of performance for me as well. I was overwhelmed by everything...the people, the heat, the speeches, by everyone wanting a little piece of me.  I was totally in my element but was not up to the task.  Being a minor celebrity is quite cool, actually, but I was not feeling good and I missed my big moment.

and coming out this week or next, an article in "Dialog Textil", which is a textile trade publication.
